Key Distinguishing Features:
The Dorsal Hump & Fin: As the whale arches its back to dive, you can see the characteristic small dorsal fin resting on a broad, raised hump (which is where they get their name).
Fluking Behavior: The tail flukes lift high out of the water before a deep dive—a classic behavior characteristic of humpbacks in coastal waters like Southeast Alaska. Heather and I were fortunate to be sitting on the deck of the Ruby Princess, when I spotted the blow from one of the whales off in the distance.
