Here is to our Great Adventure

Exciting Adventures Ahead!

Camp has finished, and the last week has been finalized. Now, we are off to explore the beauty of the USA and Canada!

Join us as we travel through this sabbatical adventure, sharing our experiences and memories along the way! Stay tuned for updates and photos from our explorations!

Michael and Heather Reed live in Amarillo. Well we own a house in Amarillo. Heather is a Community Regional minister for the CCSW and Mike travels with her to make sure she knows where she is going and takes care of her, because otherwise she would be lost. Heather has been serving this region since 2018, with Mike retiring in 2021, and is taking a sabbatical now after serving full time since 2021. They have been planning their adventures forever and are excited to relax, rejuvenate and recharge for the future with the Christian Church in the Southwest.

You don’t know Boston until you come to bean town. It is a bustling city with a noticeably younger and diverse population. Boston has over 50 accredited colleges with student attendance of over 250 thousand. This doesn’t include Harvard or Cambridge Universities because they are not in the Boston proper. We messed up by going to these universities today. It was the first day back to classes and every student was out walking out in between cars. Plenty of crosswalks just few use them. Just like Deer, Duck, Elk, and Bear refuse to use theirs they get it from the humans. Lol 🤪

The city swells when classes are in session and noticeably eases as students go home for breaks our tour guide told us yesterday. It will always be a younger progressive city because of its influx and influence on education. Law, medicine, and the arts are the cornerstone in Bostons history and future. He also said it would be amiss if he didn’t say something about the architecture. Man we have some of the greatest designs and some of the ugliest buildings in the world.

We checked another item off my bucket list. Fenway Park! My mom’s dad, Granddad Hill was a true Boston Red Sox’s fan and would sit with me watching a black and white televised game. High tech back then for 1968.

Heather and I took a behind the scenes tour of Fenway Park including a trip to the top of the Green Monster! So cool, I even got to use the hoity-toity restroom exclusively for the elite season ticket holders.

The park’s capacity is 37,105 for day games and 37,555 for night games. It is the oldest and smallest MLB stadium. We learned lots of facts from our guide Doug who enjoys sharing his vast knowledge of the Boston Red Sox history.

We heard stories about Babe Ruth, the curse of the bambino, beloved owners, and secrets of the ball park. Enjoyed every moment. I felt my Granddad was watching and smiling 😊

After the tour we headed to get us some jerseys and some lunch. We ate nachos at an outdoor restaurant right across from the stadium. We enjoyed our great seats and the commentary from everyone around us. Seattle Mariners fans right in front and Boston fans everywhere else. One Seattle fan sitting in front of Heather had a voice that that could drown out a freight train’s horns! She was loud and proud (maybe a little tipsy) and not shy to be seated in opposition. Definitely, a great crowd. This game was focused on kids with cancer and who had beat cancer. They brought a large group on children, youth and their parents on the field in bright yellow shirts as This is our fight song blared through the speakers. A very special tribute. Heather may have teared up….okay I know she did… then the Sox’s lost again. Heather and I headed out an inning early and were still in traffic forever.

Dinner from Chic-fil-a and back to our hotel. Last night in Boston! We turn in the rental car tomorrow. Will have a total of miles to date along with a total of near misses regarding the running over thousands of college students wearing Beats headphones and staring into the abyss of their cellphones. I messed that incomplete thought up didn’t I?

Heather had an epiphany at the game. She said they ( the players) looked like babies. I said that her age is showing and that baseball is 50% mental! The other half is drinking cheap beer in the bleachers while yelling at a teenager in a striped shirt. Just saying…
